ORBIS
ORBIS is a nonprofit, global development organization whose mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness in developing countries. How do we do this? By strengthening the capacity of our local eye health partners to prevent and treat avoidable blindness.
Through capacity building, our partners gain self-sufficiency in providing quality eye care, and residents enjoy quality treatment that is affordable, accessible and sustainable.
Capacity building encompasses:
Clinical training
Technical assistance
Institutional development
Community education
Behavioral change
Health care reform
Cyber-Sight
In 2002, ORBIS International initiated Cyber-Sight, a telemedicine program providing ophthalmologists in developing countries the opportunity to connect with expert mentors through the Internet. What started as a simple sequence of e-mail communications during a 1998 ORBIS program in Havana, Cuba, now makes it possible for ophthalmology professionals in developing countries to benefit from the knowledge and experience of ORBIS volunteer faculty whenever the need arises. Cyber-Sight establishes an "extended presence," enabling ORBIS to further transfer knowledge outside the parameters of the Flying Eye Hospital or a hospital-based program. ORBIS volunteer medical faculty offer online assistance to local doctors in diagnosing and treating patients while giving them the opportunity to grow in skills and confidence.
Program components
Cyber-Sight has three distinctive program components to aid blindness prevention:
E-Consultation links partners with expert mentors for the purpose of patient consultation on all cases, including pediatric ophthalmology.
E-Resources provides convenient access to ophthalmology educational resources and materials geared to any eye care provider worldwide.
E-Learning allows enrolled doctors to take tests covering basic ophthalmic material while earning continuing medical education credit.
E-Resources components:

Optician, Optometrist, Ophthalmologist
Opticians, Optometrists and Ophthalmologists all provide eye care services.
Optometrists and ophthalmologists examine eyes and prescribe vision correcting lenses.
Opticians manufacture and dispense corrective lenses.
For the majority of individuals an optometrist is the doctor of choice for routine eye health and vision examinations. Today's modern Optometrist has Corneal Specialists, Retinal Specialists, Glaucoma Specialists and Oculoplastic Surgeons on their eye health care team. Patient co-management between Optometrists, Ophthalmologists and Opticians is customary to provide the best in eye health care for their patients. The following descriptions may aid you in selecting the eye care professional to meet your personal needs.
OPTICIAN : An optician makes, verifies and delivers lenses, frames and other specially fabricated optical devices and/or contact lenses upon prescription (from an optometrist or ophthalmologist) to the intended wearer. The opticians' functions include prescription analysis and interpretation; determination of the lens forms best suited to the wearers needs; the preparation and delivery of work orders for the grinding of lenses and the fabrication of eye wear, the verification of the finished ophthalmic products; and the adjustment, replacement, repair and reproduction of previously prepared ophthalmic lenses, frames and other specially fabricated ophthalmic devices. Certification by the American Board of Opticianry or the National Contact Lens Examiners is optional. Some states have regulatory agencies that license opticians.
OPTOMETRIST / OPTOMETRIC PHYSICIAN :
Doctors of Optometry or, optometric physicians are independent primary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disorders of the eye and associated structures as well as the diagnosis of related systemic conditions. Optometric Physicians prescribe and treat glaucoma, eye infections and eye inflammations. They fit and dispense glasses and contact lenses, thus providing total eye health and vision care for all ages. Optometric physicians do not perform surgery. An optometric physician has completed four years of college premedical education and four years of graduate education at an accredited College of Optometry, earning a Doctorate in Optometry.
Ophthalmologist: The Ophthalmologist has the degree Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and is a primary and secondary, medical/surgical eye care provider. This Doctor has completed four years of college, four years of medical school and four years of residency and internships relating to the diagnosis and treatment, including surgery, of diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists may also perform intricate surgical procedures including cataracts removal and lens implant, corneal transplant, glaucoma surgery and various laser procedures.
Eye Strain
In recent years computer eye strain has become a major office-related health complaint. Effects differ depending on the on the worker, but include physical fatigue and decreased productivity and accuracy in the workplace. Fortunately, there are steps that both workers and employers can take to reduce computer eye strain and the associated symptoms of computer vision syndrome (CVS).
Get a Computer Eye Exam`
A crucial first step for workers is to get a computer eye exam. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends an annual eye exam for anyone regularly using a computer. If you spend a great deal of time on the computer, it's likely that your eye doctor will write you a prescription for computer eyeglasses.

Computer Vision Syndrome
Computers have become the primary medium through which we receive information-and we receive it through our eyes and visual system.
- Do you get headaches or eyestrain from staring at your computer monitor?
- At the end of a long day in front of your computer screen, is it difficult to focus on distant objects?

You may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
Computer vision syndrome is a serious problem for the millions of people who spend hours in front of a computer every day. Aside from the physical discomfort you may experience from symptoms, Computer vision syndrome can have a lasting effect on your vision. There are several preventive steps that you should take if you frequently use a computer.
You may need computer glasses for mid-range vision enhancement, or the lighting around your desk area may need to be adjusted to keep you from squinting. These are simple fixes that will make you much happier.
